For the second consecutive year, I had the honor of designing my association’s digital annual report. In a time of shrinking budgets and shortened attention spans, we made the decision a couple of years ago to move our annual report from a printed product, which came in around $25,000 for production, printing and mailing, to a fully digital product with a complementary postcard to our membership pointing them to the site.

Of course, we didn’t want to repeat the design and look of the 2017 year in review because, well, each year is different than the previous. So, for 2018, I designed a microsite with a full-screen motion background splash page and full-page scrolling layout for each of our content categories: advocacy, education, innovation and how broadcasters touch lives.

The challenge was the ensure a clean user experience across many devices, especially with a combination of elements at play, including a full-screen motion background, ensuring content on each of the topic pages didn’t overflow beyond the background images, and the pages loaded quickly. It was often an exercise in frustration because when something looked good on desktop browsers, it wasn’t a clean mobile experience, but ultimately, I think it came out looking pretty good. If you’d like to know specifics about some of the techniques I used, please drop me a note! I’d be happy to geek out on it. 🙂
