This past December, I had the honor and privilege of designing my association’s first-ever digital annual report. In previous years, we have produced a fairly large printed piece that gets mailed out to our membership, advocates and partners. For 2017, we decided to do it digitally, but the mandate was to make it not look like a typical website.

So that meant no typical navigation, less copy, strong images, and “something with frequency waves,” according to my awesome boss. Um. Okay.

After many late night creative sessions, lots of looking at codepen.io and other sites, I came up with a design that uses circular images in a linear narrative format. Rather than typical navigation, we used the organization’s descriptor words, “advocacy,” “education,” “innovation” to categorize stories. The most fun part was creating a dynamic, moving “frequency” that ties the site together in a fun way. The wave also helps highlight the fact that broadcasters provide content over the air for free.

You can have a look at the full report here and see all the wonderful things broadcasters do to serve their communities and innovate for the future.

Now the next challenge is to make this even more different and dynamic for 2018!
